Module 12 — Reviews, UGC & Social Proof Stack
Reviews That Convert (and How to Get Them)
10 min · video · Intermediate
A store with 4 reviews converts at 1.1%. The same store with 47 reviews converts at 2.4%. The same store with 200+ photo reviews converts at 3.6%. The product is identical. The funnel is identical. The lift is the social proof. Most AU dropshippers leave 80% of their potential reviews uncollected because they wait for customers to write them voluntarily. Today: the post-purchase request flow that lifts review rate from 4% to 18%.
Why review rate matters more than store traffic
Conversion-rate math is brutal. Doubling traffic at flat conversion rate doubles revenue. Lifting conversion rate from 1.1% to 2.4% on flat traffic does the same thing — for free. Reviews are the single highest-leverage CRO move below the layout/copy work.
Real benchmarks for AU dropshipping stores in 2026:
| Reviews on product | Average conversion rate |
|---|
| 0-3 | 0.8-1.2% |
| 4-15 | 1.5-1.8% |
| 16-50 | 2.0-2.5% |
| 51-150 | 2.6-3.2% |
| 150+ with photos | 3.0-4.0% |
The marginal value of each review is highest in the 4-50 range — going from 4 reviews to 30 reviews shifts the conversion needle more than going from 200 to 500. So focus your review-collection effort on every product before it has 50 reviews; after that, returns diminish.
The post-purchase request flow
Most stores send one review request 14 days after purchase. Result: 4-6% review rate. The flow that lifts this to 18% has three touches:
Touch 1 — Day 5 after delivery (not after purchase). Hook off Shopify's delivery confirmation event, not the order event. Email subject: "How is your [product]?" Body: "Hi [name], your [product] should have arrived a few days ago. We hope you're loving it. If you have a moment, would you share a quick review?" Link to product review page. No incentive at this stage.
Touch 2 — Day 14 if no review yet. Subject: "Quick favour, [name]?" Body: brief reminder + offer 10% off next order in exchange for a review. This is where most reviews come from.
Touch 3 — Day 28 if still no review. Subject: "Last chance — A$5 off for your honest review." Body: final ask with a small concrete incentive. Acknowledges the customer is busy.
Cumulative response rate across the three touches: 16-22% in well-run AU stores. Klaviyo handles the entire flow with conditional logic.
Photo reviews — the 3x multiplier
Text reviews convert. Photo reviews convert 3x more. The reason: photo reviews bypass the "stock photo / fake testimonial" suspicion that AU consumers default to. A real customer photo of the product in their home is structurally believable.
The ask: in Touch 2 of the flow, offer 15% off (instead of 10%) for a photo review. Roughly 1-in-5 review-leavers will include a photo if asked. A store with 200 reviews and 40 photo reviews converts noticeably better than one with 200 text-only reviews.

What kills review rate
Three operator mistakes drop review collection to 2-3%:
- Review request comes before product arrives. Email lands day 5 after purchase but shipping took 14 days. Customer hasn't received the item yet, so requests get ignored. Hook the email off delivery confirmation, not order placement.
- One ask, one shot. Most operators send one review request and forget. Two follow-ups double the response rate.
- No incentive ever. Customers in 2026 expect a small thank-you for reviewing. A 10-15% off code is fine; gift cards and bigger discounts can run afoul of ACCC rules on incentivised reviews (must be clearly disclosed).
ACCC compliance for incentivised reviews
ACCC guidance on incentivised reviews (2024-2025):
- You can offer an incentive for honest reviews.
- You must disclose the incentive to potential reviewers and on the displayed review.
- You cannot offer an incentive conditional on a positive review. "5-star reviews get A
